5 viral hooks to use as a musician (part 3)

As an artist, planning content for social media and thinking of hooks that will retain your audience can make you feel frustrated by having to waste your valuable time on something you don’t like to do instead of using that time to create music.

Don’t worry, I’ve done it for you!

Because a good hook can make the difference in whether people stop to listen to your music or not.

ETZETERA – Tonight, Tonight (cover) EN

I’ve recorded my own version of the legendary 90s song “Tonight, Tonight”.

I haven’t changed it much because, for me, it is a perfect song, which takes me back to the years of my youth and that is why I wanted to record it and share it…

Original song by William Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins)

5 mixing effects explained (part 2)

As an independent artist, songwriter, or singer, there are some terms that it will be good for you to know so that you can better communicate with your music producer. And it’s essential that you know how to explain your vision of the song to him so that he can help you translate it and achieve the result you want.

In another entry, I explained the ones that for me are the most common: Reverb, delay, distortion/saturation, chorus, and tremolo. If you haven’t seen it, I’ll leave it HERE.

Today I leave you 5 other effects that are used in the mix:

Telephone effect

It’s a very creative effect for vocals that looks especially good on backing vocals or adlibs, to create contrast with the main vocal.

It’s also a resource that you can use when there is a breakdown part in the song after a very energetic chorus, although you can use it whenever you want and give free rein to your imagination.

Auto-Tune

Auto-Tune is an audio processor created by Andy Hildebrand for Antares Audio Technologies. It’s used in vocals to mask inaccuracies and errors, which is why it has allowed many artists to produce recordings with much more precise tuning. So, it tunes your voice perfectly and that’s why it has always been surrounded by controversy… But Auto-Tune is also used as an artistic resource with which to obtain interesting effects and sounds.

Auto-Tune was used to produce the vocal distortion effect on the song “Believe” by singer Cher recorded in 1998, which was the first commercial recording to use this software for that purpose. After the success of this song, it was also known as the “Cher effect”.

My favorite plugins
  • Auto-Tune: Antares Auto-Tune Pro, Melda MAutoPitch (FREE)

Flanger

Flanger is a sound effect that produces a characteristic oscillating metallic sound, especially in the mid and high frequencies.

The flanger effect has its origins in open-reel tape recordings. It consists of mixing the original signal with a time-delayed copy, with the particularity that the delay is very short but varies periodically.

Common controls in flanger processing modules are as follows:

  • Delay: it’s the maximum phase difference threshold of the duplicated wave to the original, it is usually expressed in milliseconds.
  • Frequency: is the oscillation frequency of the phase shift of the duplicated wave.
  • Depth: It is the amount of the original wave that is mixed with the duplicated one.
My favorite plugins
  • Flanger: MFlangerMB, Bue Cat’s Flanger (FREE)

Tape stop

This is a feature that basically simulates a cassette tape stopping. Those of us who listened to music in the 80s and 90s know that effect that was created when the Walkman ran out of batteries and the music began to sound louder and louder until it stopped… Some devices even took a while to stop playing the music from the moment you pressed the “stop” button.

So that effect has been used creatively in different styles, especially in hip-hop. It can be achieved by doing a series of processes, but there are already plugins that work wonderfully.

My favorite plugins
  • Tape Stop: Wavesfactory Cassette Transport

Fade in/out

It’s simply the effect that is created when a sound appears, increasing in volume little by little (fade in) and when it disappears, decreasing in volume little by little (fade out).

It can be used both on individual sounds, such as a voice or an instrument, or on the sound of the song for the intro or the outro.

I hope this information helps you improve when creating your music… If it helps you, leave a comment and tell me!

KIFFLUX – Heart (feat. Lee Deun) (EN)

“Heart” by Kifflux is out!

Kifflux is a Korean singer based in Las Vegas who is doing really well. He’s collaborating with great artists and music producers, and thanks to his hard work, he has already surpassed the milestone of 10K monthly listeners on Spotify, for example…

For me, it is an honor to have been part of this project, mixing and mastering the song.

Thanks for trusting me!

Why cover songs are a good idea if you are an independent artist

Even if you have your own original songs, it can always be a great idea to make covers (versions) of your favorite songs.

In this post, I explain why, cover songs are one of the best marketing tools that you have as an independent artist.

cover songs

THEY ARE POTENTIALLY VIRAL

They are a great combination of something familiar and something new.

In a cover, you are uniting a song known to the public and something new, since you contribute your personal style or your vision of that song.

YOU SHOW YOUR PERSONAL BRAND

With a cover you are going to show what you are capable of, your style, your influences, why you sound the way you do, what music you like… and this quickly connects with many people if you do it well.

YOU ARE GOING TO LEARN A LOT

You are going to have to study the original song to see what elements it has, what instruments it uses, and what musical resources the artist has used when composing both the music, the lyrics, and the melodies.

It will help you a lot to improve your own songs.

If this sounds like a good idea to you, pick one of your favorite songs and release your own version! Of course, if you need help with production, mixing and/or mastering, count on my help…

How to submit a demo to a record label

Being an independent artist has its advantages, but as musicians, we have all dreamed of signing with a record label that helps us leap in our musical career.

This post alone isn’t going to get you signed to the record label of your dreams, but it will ensure that when you contact a record label, you do it the right way.
Because, unfortunately, it’s not your music that makes the first impression, but how you capture their attention and attract them to your music.

These are the points you should keep in mind:

YOUR MUSIC

First of all, don’t submit a work still in progress. If you’re going to apologize for the sound quality of your song, don’t even bother sending it. These people are professionals, they know what an unmixed track sounds like. You want to make sure that your song is 100% finished and that it is your best work.

Keep in mind that they are listeners like anyone else and statistics say that a person makes a decision about a song in the first 30 seconds. If they don’t like it, they hit skip and move on.

The best thing you can do if you have a long intro is to create a Radio mix. Radio versions are usually shortened versions, most are right at the 3-minute mark or less. So you don’t want to send them an 8-minute track with a 2-minute intro (unless that’s normal for your musical style).

It must also be original work. Remixes or covers, or the use of material that you do not own the copyright to, including any samples of TV or movie quotes, are not permitted.

Make sure your track is clearly labeled (Artist Name – Song Title), whether it is an mp3 or posted online on a streaming service. Make everything you do look professional!

WHO TO SEND YOUR MUSIC TO

Don’t send a mass email to just any label you find, do your research!

Know the style of the label and make sure you fit what they are looking for.

If you find a personal email, address that person by their name. If this is a general label email, address them by the label name.

Don’t send your demos to their social media accounts. Take the time to visit their website and find information about submitting demos.

MEET THEIR REQUIREMENTS

Here are some examples from real-label websites on how they accept demo submissions.
If you don’t include all the information they’re looking for, your demo will go into the pile of things that will never be heard. Follow the instructions exactly as they ask you to.

WHAT TO SEND

If there is no form and you need to send an email, don’t send them an mp3 as a download attachment. They’re probably going to delete it, no one likes their entire mailbox space to be filled with large files that you need to download.

You, make it easy for him! Send them a link to a reputable streaming service like SoundCloud. You don’t have to send them a link to a track with a million plays and likes, make the track private and then send them the private link.

If they need a link for a download and no requirements are listed, send them a link from a reputable file-sharing service like Google Drive or DropBox.

WHAT TO SAY

Be brief, concise, and direct.

Check your grammar. You can do this using the free version of Grammarly. Use the spell checker in your document and email program. Check it and then check it again!

This is a template of what your email should look like. This has been stated by record labels that actually look at demo submission emails. What they want is your name, a short bio, the name of the song, a way to listen to the song, and your email. So don’t send them other unnecessary information.

Remember to personalize the email. Always do it specifically for the label you write to.

As simple as this…

FOLLOW UP

Remember that record labels receive hundreds of demo submissions every day, so don’t expect an instant response.

A good waiting time would be 2 weeks. If the answer is no, they will probably never respond, but don’t be discouraged. Just like when you ask for a job, they’re not always going to say yes. And that’s fine.

The best way to follow up would be to send an email to the same address you sent the demo. This is a modified version of the example I gave you for the original presentation.

Don’t seem desperate or pushy and show that you understand that their time is valuable.

Include how you would be a good fit for their label, include a link to the track, thank them for their time, and you’re done.

If you still don’t hear back within 2 weeks, they probably aren’t interested.

If your goal is exclusively to sign with them thanks to this song, you can continue working on it, but I would wait about 6 months before sending it to them again. If you decide to do so, there is no need to mention that you have already sent it before. Simply send it again as you did the first time.

5 things that will change your musical career

If you are serious about your musical career and really want to advance, just making music is not enough. Being an independent artist is much more than that. There are a series of factors that you should take into account and, therefore, today I want to talk to you about 5 of them.

1. Avoid traps that stop most artists from succeeding:

  • Don’t try to do everything yourself.
  • Get out of your comfort zone, don’t let fear paralyze you.
  • Stop procrastinating and act.
  • Don’t let other people’s opinions distract you.
  • It’s not about where you are now, but where you want to be in the future.

2. Get organized for success:

  • What is your weekly schedule? When do you usually spend time composing, practicing, learning, creating content and taking breaks?
  • Sort all your songs and find out which ones are best for publishing, which ones for collaborations, which ones need revision, etc.
  • Take an inventory. What do you have and what do you need? (ideas, current skills, contacts, social networks, etc.).
  • Discipline will help you when motivation is lacking.

3. Set your goals:

  • Where do you want to be in 6 months – 1 year?
  • Set your goals regarding your music, your social networks and your health (mental and physical).
  • Think of 1 or 2 main goals in each category (short and/or long term) and then add smaller goals that will help you achieve your main goal.

4. Build a community:

  • Use your skills/personality and be yourself.
  • Building a community is much more than just posting ads…
  • Do the things you already do and just film it.
  • Don’t be fooled into thinking that you don’t have time or that you can’t do it.
  • Check out my other posts if you need ideas on what to post.

5. Avoid exhaustion and burning out:

  • Put your mental health first.
  • Surround yourself with people who support you.
  • Have an abundant mindset, dream big.
  • Perfectionism and overthinking things are the reasons why: we don’t publish, we don’t finish songs, we don’t connect with people.

5 mixing effects explained

As an independent artist, songwriter or singer, there are some terms that it will be good for you to know so that you can better communicate with your music producer.

And it’s essential that you know how to explain your vision of the song to him/her so that he/she can help you translate it and achieve the result you want.

These are 5 of the effects that are most used in the mix, both on voices and other instruments:

Reverb

Reverberation is an acoustic phenomenon that occurs when sound reflects off a surface and returns to the listener’s ear. It is essential for creating a spatial and realistic sound in music production.

Some types of reverb
  • Room / Chambers: Simulates the sound of a high-quality recording room.
  • Plates: This is a technique in which sound is sent through a suspended metal plate that vibrates and produces a reverberation.
  • Hall: Simulates the sound of a concert hall or similar-sized space.
My favorite plugins
  • Room / Chambers: Waves Manny Marroquin Reverb, Waves Abbey Road Chambers, Cubase RoomWorks
  • Plates: UAD Pure Plate Reverb, Waves Abbey Road Plates
  • Hall: FabFilter Pro-R

Delay

Delay is one of the most popular effects in the world of music and sound production. It is used to create repetitions of an audio signal, which produces an echo effect and serves to give depth and texture to an audio track.

My favorite plugins
  • Delay: Soundtoys EchoBoy, Waves Manny Marroquin Delay

Distortion/Saturation

In its basic definition, distortion is an alteration of the waveform of an audio signal.

Distortion comes in many forms, although one of the most popular is called clipping. Clipping occurs when an audio signal exceeds the maximum signal that a system is capable of handling. Saturation, overdrive and fuzz are all forms of distortion.

My favorite plugins
  • Distortion/Saturation: Soundtoys Decapitator, FabFilter Saturn

Chorus

The Chorus effect is basically an effect that doubles the instrument signal and adds a pitch shift and a small delay to one of the divisions. The result you will get is a “chorus” effect, as if several musicians were playing exactly the same thing as you.

My favorite plugins
  • Chorus: Arturia Chorus JUN-6, Blue Cat’s Chorus

Tremolo

Tremolo is the effect that allows you to obtain a cyclic variation in the volume of a signal.

My favorite plugins
  • Tremolo: Soundtoys Tremolator
