You’ve probably heard about EPKs before.
But what exactly is an EPK? What should it include? Why do you, as an artist, need one? How can you create your own EPK?
In this post, I’m going to answer these questions.
WHAT‘S AN EPK?
An Electronic Press Kit (EPK) is an online collection of promotional materials.
This is similar to a resume or CV, but for musicians!
EPKs are designed to provide music industry professionals (booking agents, venue managers, record labels, and the media) with information about who you are as an artist.
WHAT SHOULD AN EPK INCLUDE?
It depends on the level your musical career is at, but there are 3 key points:
- Biography of the artist. Tell the world who you are and what you do. Many recommend writing it in the third person. In another post I explained what points to include.
- Photos. Include high-quality photos or covers of your albums, which can be used for promotional purposes.
- Your music. Highlight your most popular songs or those that most authentically represent your artist personality. Include links to your music. I recommend that you directly integrate a player of your songs, using a platform like SoundCloud, to make it easier and faster to listen to your music.
You can also add:
- Music videos. Share your best video clips.
- Achievements/highlights. Include performances, interview quotes, awards, analytics showing the impact your music is having, etc.
- Upcoming releases. Announce your upcoming projects to maintain the hype.
- Contact information. Include your social networks, email, web,…
IMPORTANT: Always keep your information updated.
WHY DO YOU NEED AN EPK?
The main function of your EPK is to make yourself known and create possible alliances. As its use is so widespread, any manager or agent will expect you to have one if you are a moderately professional artist.
It is not recommended that you use your official website for the press, it is better that your website is directed to your fans and your EPK to the press.
HOW TO CREATE AN EPK (FREE)?
The easiest thing is to use a section of your website as an EPK. If you still don‘t have your own official website, in another post I will explain why you should create it and what to include.
There are many ways and resources to create a great website (and therefore your EPK) for free like WordPress, Wix, or even Google Sites. Of course, you can always turn to a professional.
If this information helps you, I would love to read about your experience in the comments.
